Download Manager is one of the most requisite applications that every internet user would need to have in their arsenal. Though the popular web browsers like Chrome, Firefox and IE come with their own stock download managers, but these built-in download managers can’t be customized for settings like speed, queue, schedule etc, and thus they aren’t able to even come close to third party feature-loaded programs like IDM and Down Tango. If you’re doing a lot of downloading, then the apps like these would offer you more than enough options to fulfill your downloading needs. But the problem is that most of these downloaders don’t come free. Yesterday I had a chance to get my hands on a free download manager called EagleGet, and I must say, it’s an exceptional free alternative to Internet Download Manager.
The free EagleGet Download Accelerator offers almost all the features of a paid download manager like IDM. The application comes with a clean and responsive UI, is very lightweight (uses less than 13MB of RAM while running) and has the ability to increase the download speed by up to 6 times. You can download any type of file with it, as it automatically recognizes the specific file types like Documents, Media, Software and Compressed.
EagleGet works on Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8 and is compatible with almost all popular browsers. EagleGet integrates itself into browsers and installs the required add-on/extension during the setup. This way it automatically grabs any download URL coming from the browser. The application supports the manual download as well. For that, just open the app and hit the Add Download button. Copy and paste the download link into the required space, specify the download location and finally click the Download option.
Like the other popular download managers, when a file is added for download, EagleGet lets you see its file progress and transfer rate with options to pause and delete the file. When the download task is completed, a notification appears above the system tray to quickly open the file or navigate to its folder.
The application has a built-in video sniffer to detect and download streaming videos from sites like YouTube or Vimeo. To download a video, hover your mouse over the video player and click the Download option that appears there.
EagleGet has a rich customization options in the Configuration window under General, Connection, Proxy, Monitory, Automation, Scheduler and Notification tabs. Though the default settings are pretty satisfactory for most of the users, there are still some options you would like to customize to your benefit. For example you can Auto categorize downloads and set a Default download option under General tab. Automation section allows you to automatically scan downloaded files with your antivirus. The Scheduler lets you choose the time of day as well as the days of the week you want your downloads to be active, whereas you can toggle silent mode of the download manager under Notification section.
In summary, EagleGet is a lightweight and easy-to-use download manager, offers elegant UI, high download speed and rich functionality, leaving no doubt that its one of the best free alternatives to premium download managers like IDM and Down Tango.
