Are You Dark Skinned ? Ice Cream Sandwich Has Issues With You
An alternative to PIN, pattern and sliding unlocks is the Face Unlock which got every one excited especially when Galaxy Nexus was announced with the latest iteration of Android 4.0 or the Galaxy Nexus.
For many however, this was only shortlived. Who were those few and why ? They were the people who were not considered a target audience when Ice Cream Sandwich was being written. They were the people who had dark skin tones. Yes sir YOU ! Not ME !
This face unlock thingy is just a toy. To incorporate it as a safety feature is not a wise decision at all. If you use it as one, please don;t. This technology is still in the very early age. It’s not that Google is a racist. It is just that this kind of technology even that in one of the best and top-notch gadgets in th world have problems detecting dark areas of the face/body. If you are wearing sun-glasses or any dark shaded glasses, Google will not let you use your phone.
I you had to take the security to the next lvel then why didn’t they just put in some Retina scanner. Besides, they did add that bloody barometer, didn’t they ?
it works pretty fine for me… and im darker than the editor of this article.
it also differentiates me from my relatives perfectly and no one’s face has worked for them.
i agree tho, under darker conditions, its more useless but thats why u put in a PIN or pattern
best idea is to set it up in bright conditions… when in darker conditions, it uses my shape of my head to unlock.
its in its early stages yes, but it works pretty fine for me. you have facial hair tho… whether shaving can influencee it, im not sure… but ive only got a lil moustache and a small amount of chin hair.
but i believe google will find a way to make it 100% accurate soon im sure
